What Is Sound Healing?
Sound Healing uses vibrations of various instruments, voice, and other sounds to help relax the mind and body bringing a sense of well-being. It has been found that certain frequencies can shift our mood from low energy of guilt and fear to higher vibrations of love and joy. It has been shown to reduce stress and pain, lower blood pressure and breathing, increase circulation and digestion and strengthen the immune system. This type of therapy is used in conjunction with other therapies for optimal results.
We are surrounded by sound every day and it affects us, whether we’re hearing a rumbling train from the window, a blaring car alarm or our favorite song playing on our phone. Some sounds are known to stimulate dopamine production, a neurotransmitter that encourages feelings of happiness and motivation, while others are known to induce the opposite response. This is why it’s important to be intentional about the sounds we expose ourselves to throughout the day.
According to a recent study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, listening to soothing sounds such as singing bowls, gongs, and chimes can promote an overall sense of well-being and elicit a relaxation response in the body and brain. It is thought that these vibrations stimulate ion channels within the cell, which are responsible for receiving nourishment and communicating with other cells. When these channels become dysfunctional, they can cause the cell to “fall asleep.” Sound can help open and activate these ion channels promoting a healing response.
While the science behind it is still evolving, countless anecdotes support the efficacy of Sound Healing. People report feeling very calm after a session and a sense of relief from long-held tension. Some have visualisations or receive downloads during a session, while others feel emotionally cleansed and energized. Each experience is unique and personal to the individual.
In a private session, Niyama’s Sound Healing Practitioner creates a sound treatment to fit the client’s symptomatic state and intention. This could involve Tibetan bowls, tuning forks, crystal bowls, gongs, chimes and more depending on the condition being treated. For example, a session for someone suffering from anxiety may involve guided imagery and classical music as it is believed that these specific sounds can help to calm and settle the nervous system.
While many people come to a sound healing session for stress relief, it has also been shown to positively affect other conditions such as depression, anxiety, chronic pain, PTSD, asthma and more. This is because it’s been discovered that when our cellular vibrations are out of balance, the rest of our body suffers as a consequence. This is why so many of our clients find that regular sound healing sessions have a profoundly positive impact on their lives and health.
