Tony Lama

Tony Lama first opened his cobbler's shop on East Overland Street in El Paso in 1913. That year he made 20 pairs of hand-crafted cowboy boots with just one assistant; quickly after word spread across ranchers and cowboys throughout across the Southwest about the excellence of his work and the quality of his work, demand exploded.

The family was Italian immigrants from Syracuse, New York and started his training as a shoemaker at age eleven. Then he became a part of the United States Cavalry as an apprentice cobbler at Fort Bliss where he perfected his craft while earning admiration from military personnel for making boots that fit perfectly.

After he left the Army, he relocated back to El Paso and established his boots company with Esther Hernandez and their six children, all helping run it. They were strict about quality not mass-producing their boots – keeping an inventory of each person's measurements of each foot to ensure that every pair of boots was custom-made for each customer.
